Co-op residents, namaste

By Angela Romeo

Namaste is a regular part of my life. It is a Hindi salutation, meaning “I bow to you,” with which my yoga instructors end every class.

Recently, one of my instructors did not end the session with namaste. It threw my whole experience off balance. My class felt incomplete without that one little word.

There’s a word the ROC-NH™ team uses all the time, to the point where it carries nearly as much meaning in our work as namaste does in yoga: Consistency.

In an unpredictable world, we all need certain things to be consistent. For many of us, our home is that area of certainty and predictability. We know that when we lay our heads down to sleep it will be on our worn-in pillow. We know our favorite blanket will be waiting on the couch to snuggle under.

Resident-ownership of manufactured housing communities provides consistency for homeowners and their families. They don’t fear that the land under their home will be sold and that they’ll have to move. They don’t worry that the rent they pay for their lot will increase on a park owner’s whim. Instead, they know those fees are used to create a better community and that they have a voice in how the money is used.

The consistency, the predictability, that resident-ownership brings to their lives is a great thing to witness.

Namaste.

What a wonderful blog, Angela.
The timing of your posting is rather ironic. We heard today that the residents of Towles Trailer Park in Littleton, NH lost a four-year battle to purchase their community. Unfortunately, these folks will not enjoy the consistency and security of land outlined in your article. This is a good reminder about the importance and impact of creating resident-owned communities. For the full story, go to http://bit.ly/f4bFfo
